Polypropylene spacers are used in undercrossings and overcrossings where active pipelines must mandatorily be installed inside a protection casing pipe. Typical applications include crossings under roads, railways, rivers, bridges, walkways or when pipelines run alongside major roads, European roads or highways.
Advantages:
- Easy installation of the carrier pipe thanks to the plastic material which minimizes the friction coefficient between the two surfaces;
- By minimizing friction, it prevents damage to the protective layer and the pipe insulation;
- A wide range of spacer rib heights is available, ensuring concentric positioning of the carrier pipe inside the casing pipe when needed;
- Due to the excellent electrical insulation properties of the plastic material, all requirements of cathodic protection systems are fulfilled.
Material:
Polypropylene has a very favourable friction coefficient due to its waxed-steel-like surface structure. Its sliding-friction coefficient is around 0.2, while steel typically has a coefficient of around 0.5. Consequently, friction is minimized.
The material is both durable and flexible, making it crack resistant. Flexibility of the insulator body, stability of the spacer rib due to its geometry and excellent dielectric insulation properties are key features that recommend this solution.

Installation of Pipe Spacers and Plastic Insulators
Plastic insulators are suitable for all pipes with diameters starting from 25 mm, and the ribs / spacer fins are available in various heights to meet specific requirements.
Typically, spacer / insulator rings are installed as follows:
- pipe diam. up to 300 mm • spacing between rings 2.5 m
- pipe diam. 400–600 mm • spacing between rings 2.0 m
- pipe diam. > 600 mm • spacing between rings 1.5 m
In special cases, the distance between rings may be adjusted after evaluating the installation conditions and specific pipeline loads.

| PA/PE 2.0 – PA/PE 3.0 | 100 kg |
| PA/PE 4.0 | 200 kg |
| PA/PE 6.0 – PA/PE 12.0 | 250 kg |

Types of Pipe Spacers and Plastic Insulators
Plastic Spacer Ring PSI, PA/PE Type:
PA/PE spacer rings are available for carrier pipe OD from 25 to 336 mm. They consist of two semicircular segments. Bolts and nuts required for assembly are included.
The type code indicates the carrier pipe OD in inches and the rib height in mm (e.g. PA/PE 4-38 = 4" pipe, rib height 38 mm).
The rib height is calculated as the difference between the outer diameter of the carrier pipe and the inner diameter of the casing pipe. Actual measured dimensions must be considered, including protective coatings, rather than relying on nominal or catalogue values.
Plastic Spacer Ring PSI, AZ/AC Type:
AZ/AC spacer rings are used for carrier pipe OD between 98 and 385 mm and consist of several segments. Their number depends on the pipe diameter. Bolts and nuts for assembly are included.
The universal applicability of the AZ/AC type provides two major advantages:
- Variable ring diameter, extremely important for thick-walled pipes whose OD is significantly greater than nominal (e.g. pressure pipes AZ/AC DN16, vitrified clay pipes);
- Only two segment sizes (chord lengths) are required to assemble spacer rings for ODs from DN100 to DN350 mm, ensuring optimal storage.
Plastic Spacer Ring PSI, GKO-mk Type:
GKO-mk represents the latest generation of PSI spacers. Thanks to its wedge-lock connection system, without screws, installation is fast and easy. The flexibility of the system ensures compatibility for all pipes with diameters above 150 mm. If needed, cable support brackets can be added.
- Flexible construction
- Non-metallic connection for simple and fast installation
- Wedge-lock technology
Anti-slip PSI tapes can be added to improve adhesion on smooth surfaces or to adjust dimensions.
Plastic Spacer Ring PSI, GKO-gl and GKO-gs Types:
GKO-gs and GKO-gl are next-generation PSI spacers. Without screws and using wedge-based semi-segments, installation is extremely fast. They are suitable for pipes with outer diameters exceeding 400 mm thanks to the wide range of GKO-gh semi-segments.
If needed, additional supports for cables or bundles of cables can be added.
- Flexible construction
- Non-metallic wedge-lock connections for simple and fast installation
- Compatible with anti-slip PSI tapes for dimensional adjustments and improved adhesion
The PSI tape can be used to secure surfaces against slipping, improving grip on smooth surfaces, or for adjusting dimensions and tolerances.
Plastic Spacer Ring PSI, MA Type:
Starting from a pipe OD of 402 mm, MA spacer rings consist of two segment types (MA and MA2) with different rib heights, used to fit the corresponding pipe diameter.
The key advantage of this system is universal applicability.
The rule for determining the correct composition of MA rings is:
- for each 100 mm pipe OD = 1 MA segment
- for each 50 mm pipe OD = 2 MA segments
Bolt and nut sets required for assembly are included.
Plastic Spacer Ring PSI, RGV Type:
RGV insulating rings are used for pipes with an outside diameter (O.D.) greater than 500 mm. They differ from the MA types in that each segment has two solid, central, reinforced, load-bearing protrusions/sliding pads.
The closing rails (36 mm in height) are intended only for assembly. To achieve the required pipe O.D., RGV segments are combined with RGV 2 segments.
The special advantages of these insulating rings are their high static load capacity and versatility. The following rule is used to determine the correct composition of the insulating rings:
- for each 100 mm pipe OD = 1 RGV segment
- for each 50 mm pipe OD = 2 RGV segments
The nuts and bolts required for assembly are included.
